Vicarious Trauma – A Society of Sexual Health Advisers (SSHA) in-person Study/Training Session

We are thrilled to invite you to a SSHA Study/Training session on Vicarious Trauma in Brighton – please see all the details below.

Please do pass this on to other members in your team and to anyone else in your clinic or related organisations who may like to attend. Numbers will be limited to twenty places, as there will be a practical element to this training – so book early!

Please bring your own lunch, or there are local cafes/shops. Tea/Coffee/Juice/biscuits will be provided.

Who is this day for?

This day is for Sexual Health Advisers and other healthcare professionals dealing with patients who are impacted by trauma.

What does the day cover?

  • What is trauma?
  • Trauma and the brain
  • Facilitating a trauma-informed consultation
  • Recognising a trauma response
  • Stabilisation techniques
  • Recognising the signs of vicarious trauma
  • How to avoid vicarious trauma
  • Letting go of the trauma you have taken in
  • Self care

This training aims to equip professionals with tools to recognise and compassionately deal with trauma responses in others. This will include practical advice about how to conduct trauma-informed consultations.

The training will also equip participants with the skills to recognise and manage the indirect emotional impact of other’s trauma and explore how to stay well whilst supporting others.

Tools and strategies for self care will be explored, including basic mindfulness techniques. The training will combine some psycho-educational teaching, discussion-based learning and practical demonstration of tools and techniques.
