Revised and updated Standards for the management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
In January 2014 MEDFASH and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) published updated standards for the management of STIs. They were developed in collaboration with Public Health England (PHE) and professional and membership bodies from across healthcare, public health, and local government.
During 2013, MEDFASH managed a project for and with BASHH to undertake a comprehensive review and updating of the first national standards for the management of STIs, published in 2010. The aim was to ensure the revised standards would reflect current best practice in STI management as well as new policies and structures arising from implementation of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
To support this process the BASHH Clinical Standards Unit (CSU), along with additional individuals co-opted for the purposes of the project, worked closely with MEDFASH to revise and update the content and format of the standards. The leading relevant professional and membership bodies, as well as PHE, contributed to the review and have endorsed the revised standards. Following wider consultation, the standards were launched at a BASHH meeting on 10 January 2014.
