Sexual health services to merge in east London in face of government cuts

Public consultations have begun by Tower Hamlets council over plans to merge sexual health and contraception services across east London resulting from spending cuts.

Services at Whipps Cross and Newham General hospitals are to be integrated in a new centre planned for Stratford.

But the Whitechapel centre would remain open under the proposals for an integrated service merging sexual health and contraceptives.

More appointments with more flexible opening hours are suggested in the consultations.

“We have high levels of need for sexual health support,” Tower Hamlets Cllr Amy Whitelock Gibbs said.

“It’s crucial we make changes so we can respond to rising demand at a time when costs are rising and council budgets are squeezed by government cuts.”

The consultations run until October 12, with forms available from Idea stores or online.

A two-hour open event is also planned at Whitechapel Idea Store on Wednesday week, September 28, from 5.30pm.

Consultations so far with response from 5,000 people across east London have come up with a demand for flexible appointment times, options for home testing kits and more integrated services for sexual health and contraception in the same place.
