David qualified as a RGN in 1986 and worked in A & E in the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow for a couple of years before training as a midwife.
During his 17 years as a midwife his main area of practice was labour ward/community and he worked as a midwife practitioner before managing the Womens Reproductive Health Service led by Mary Hepburn for women with severe drug dependency/social deprivation/BBV issues. During this period, he worked part-time as a nurse and then health adviser for 3 years in Steve Retson Project in Glasgow.

He has worked as a sexual health adviser full-time since 2002 in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde areas and more recently in NHS Lanarkshire as a senior sexual health adviser. He teaches on the Sexual and Reproductive health course at the University of the West of Scotland and is also involved in their pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses.

As a ‘life-long learner’ he has gained a B.Sc in Community Health;

  • Post-Grad Certificate in Health Education/Health Promotion
  • Post Grad Diploma in Counselling and Supervision
  • Post Grad Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

He plans to migrate by portfolio soon and would like to complete an M.Sc one day!

David has been Honourary Treasurer for SSHA now for almost 3 years and has enjoyed both the challenge that this position offers – but also working as part of the NPC.
