Motivational Interviewing and Partner Notification: Reflections from BHIVA/BASHH 2026

The landscape of HIV care and partner notification (PN) continues to evolve, but at its core, it remains a profoundly human endeavour.

At the recent BHIVA/BASHH 2026 Conference, a session titled “If Not Us, Then Who?” – Motivational Interviewing and Partner Notification, resonated deeply with over 1,250 attendees, sparking meaningful conversations about the role of empathy, skill, and trust in sexual health practice.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is often perceived as an additional skill for Health Advisers, yet it is actually an intrinsic part of their daily work.

Open-ended questions, reflective listening, affirmations, and eliciting change talk are routine tools that advisers use to navigate the complexities of PN and HIV care, even if these techniques aren’t always formally recognised as MI.

The session illuminated the compassionate and nuanced ways advisers help patients face stigma, uncertainty, and difficult decisions, striking a delicate balance between supporting individual autonomy and addressing broader public health needs. MI, ultimately, is woven into the fabric of ethical and effective care.

Feedback from the conference highlighted the emotional and relational dimensions of PN, reminding us all that it’s much more than just a procedural task.

Many participants noted how the session brought forward the deeply personal aspects of the work, underscoring the importance of human connection in motivating patients and supporting them through challenging moments.

Interest in further MI training is growing, with many in the sexual health community eager to refine their skills.

The MINT UK & Ireland Chapter has welcomed sexual health professionals to collaborate, offering opportunities such as the Summer School in Cardiff and the International Conference in Lisbon this October 2026.

SSHA is also planning to offer basic MI training in 2027, so those keen to deepen their understanding should look out for upcoming announcements.

This conference session reaffirmed the vital impact of Motivational Interviewing in partner notification and celebrated the outstanding commitment of Health Advisers.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that MI will continue to shape compassionate, effective care and foster stronger connections within our sexual health community.

Watch this space for updates on MI training and further opportunities to build on the momentum from BHIVA/BASHH 2026.

The work being done in sexual health is inspiring, and together, we can continue to make a lasting difference.
